Going on vacation shouldn’t derail your dosing. Here’s the playbook.
TSA and Air Travel
- Pen or vial in carry-on, always. Checked baggage hits temperatures that can degrade the medication.
- Original packaging with prescription label speeds security
- Ice pack with hard sides is allowed (may be inspected)
- Letter from prescriber is overkill domestically, useful internationally
Cooling Solutions
- Frio insulin wallets — activate with water, no ice needed, lasts 45 hours
- Medactiv iCool — extended cooling for longer trips
- Avoid: hotel mini-fridges that freeze (most do)
Time Zone Strategy
GLP-1s are once-weekly, so a few hours of shift doesn’t matter much. For trips 6+ hours:
- Going east? Take your dose at your normal home day, then reset to local time on next dose
- Going west? Same — easier because you have more hours in the day
- Don’t double-dose trying to “catch up”
On Arrival
- Refrigerate within 24 hours of arrival
- If the pen got warm but not hot, it’s likely still fine — check the manufacturer’s stability data
- Discard if it sat in a hot car or direct sun
Side Effect Planning
Travel + new foods + dehydration = nausea risk goes up. Bring:
- Electrolyte packets
- Anti-nausea support (ginger chews, Pepcid if your doctor approves)
- A few clean carb options for soft-belly days
Pre-Trip Checklist
- Enough doses + 1 backup
- Sharps disposal plan
- Cooling case
- Pharmacy contact info at destination (just in case)
