Nausea is the most common GLP-1 side effect. Here’s how to manage it.
Why It Happens
GLP-1s slow gastric emptying. Your stomach takes longer to empty, which can trigger nausea, especially:
- After eating
- When eating too much
- With fatty/greasy foods
- In the morning
Prevention Strategies
Eating Habits
- Smaller portions - This is huge
- Eat slowly - Put fork down between bites
- Stop before full - Learn your new “full” signal
- Avoid trigger foods - Usually fatty/fried
Timing
- Some feel worse morning of injection day
- Others worse 24-48 hours after
- Track your pattern
- Plan accordingly
Food Choices
Usually Tolerated:
- Lean proteins
- Plain carbs (crackers, toast)
- Fruits and vegetables
- Soups and broths
Often Problematic:
- Fried foods
- Heavy creams/sauces
- Very fatty meats
- Large portions of anything
When Nausea Hits
Immediate Relief
- Sip ginger tea or ginger ale
- Fresh air/cool environment
- Lie down if possible
- Small sips of water
- Peppermint (tea, candy)
OTC Options
- Ginger supplements
- B6 vitamin
- Dramamine (may cause drowsiness)
- Discuss Zofran with provider
When to Worry
Contact your provider if:
- Unable to keep fluids down 24+ hours
- Severe abdominal pain
- Signs of dehydration
- Nausea doesn’t improve with titration
The Good News
For most people:
- Nausea improves over 2-4 weeks
- Body adjusts to each dose
- Becomes manageable
- Some never experience it
Hang in there - it usually gets better!
