Now that I’m a few weeks into my GLP-1 journey, I wanted to share some of the side effect management strategies that have worked for me. Everyone’s experience is different, but hopefully some of these tips might help others who are just starting out.
Important note: These are just personal experiences, not medical advice. Always talk to your healthcare provider about any side effects you’re experiencing.
Common Side Effects (and What Helped)
1. Nausea
This was my biggest challenge in the first two weeks. Here’s what helped:
- Eat smaller portions – I found that eating until I felt “satisfied” instead of “full” made a huge difference
- Avoid greasy/fatty foods – These seemed to make the nausea worse for me
- Ginger everything – Ginger tea, ginger chews, even ginger ale helped settle my stomach
- Don’t skip meals – An empty stomach actually made the nausea worse
- Take it slow in the morning – I started eating breakfast about an hour after waking up instead of right away
2. Constipation
This one caught me off guard because I didn’t expect it. What helped:
- Water, water, water – I aim for at least 80oz per day now
- Fiber – But gradually! Too much too fast made things worse
- Magnesium citrate – My doctor approved this as a gentle option
- Movement – Even a 20-minute walk seems to help
- Prunes – Old school but they work
3. Fatigue
The first week I felt more tired than usual:
- Don’t fight it – I let myself rest more the first week
- Protein – Making sure I was eating enough protein helped my energy levels
- Consistent sleep schedule – This became more important than ever
- Light exercise – Counter-intuitive, but a short walk actually helped more than napping
4. Injection Site Reactions
Minor but annoying:
- Rotate injection sites – I use a simple rotation: left thigh, right thigh, left abdomen, right abdomen
- Let the medication warm up – Taking it out of the fridge 15-30 minutes before helps
- Ice the area first – Makes the injection more comfortable
- Don’t rub after – I learned this the hard way
Things That Made Side Effects Worse
Large meals – Even if I wasn’t feeling nausea, big portions would trigger it
Alcohol – Not saying you can’t have any, but it definitely intensified nausea for me
Eating too fast – The medication slows gastric emptying, so I need to slow down too
Lying down right after eating – Recipe for disaster
Skipping the titration – I know some people want faster results, but slow titration helps your body adjust
When to Contact Your Doctor
While mild side effects are normal, definitely reach out to your healthcare provider if you experience:
- Severe or persistent nausea/vomiting
- Signs of dehydration
- Severe abdominal pain
- Symptoms of pancreatitis
- Any side effects that concern you
