New to self-injections? You’re not alone. Here’s how to build confidence.
The Basics
GLP-1 injections are subcutaneous (under the skin), not into muscle. This means:
- Short, thin needle
- Less painful than you’d think
- Most people adapt quickly
Injection Sites
Rotate between these areas:
- Abdomen (avoid 2 inches around navel) - Most common
- Thigh (front or outer)
- Upper arm (back/outer - harder to self-inject)
Step-by-Step
Preparation
- Wash hands thoroughly
- Clean injection site with alcohol (let dry)
- Let medication reach room temperature
- Check expiration date
- Inspect solution (should be clear)
Injection
- Pinch skin gently
- Insert needle at 90-degree angle
- Release pinch
- Inject slowly (count to 5-10)
- Keep needle in for 5-10 seconds
- Withdraw and apply light pressure
Tips for Less Discomfort
Temperature
- Room temperature medication hurts less
- Remove from fridge 30-60 minutes before
- Don’t inject cold medication
Technique

- Don’t hesitate - smooth motion
- Ice the area beforehand if anxious
- Distraction (TV, music) helps
